Though many in Santa Cruz County have long fought big-box retailers tooth and nail, the county will soon have its second Home Depot, along with a Best Buy electronics store and a renovated Safeway that will approximately double the size of the old one at the top of 41st Avenue.

The rise of the shopping centers

Over the next few years, proposed shopping centers will change the retail landscape of Petaluma. Palo Alto-based McNellis Partners have already done much of the work on a $10 million, multi-year refurbishing project on 1960s-era Petaluma Plaza.
